Celebrating Native American Heritage Month
November is a month associated with gratitude but also with grief. We say thanks for what we have been given but during any holiday season many are also acutely aware of what has been lost. As social work professionals and friends, we must be additionally cognizant of what has not been merely lost, but taken, especially from Indigenous groups in this country and across the globe. This month may we practice particular gratitude for the Waco and Tawakoni of the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes, the Tonkawa, the Nʉmʉnʉʉ (Comanche), Karankawa, and Lipan Apache on whose land and territories Baylor’s campuses have been and are currently situated. For those of us who are not Native American, we must remember and acknowledge that Indigenous individuals and tribes are not merely historical characters, but real-life people—clients, colleagues, community members— who have experiences and expertise to share with the rest of us.
Additionally in this particular year, we may feel gratitude for the ways we witness and experience small tastes of shared humanity with those around us, even as we grieve the enormous tensions that keep us from seeing the image of God in one another. May we experience supernatural grace, peace, and human decency in the days and weeks to come, and as we enter a season of light overlapping with darkness may we labor together using the resources and reminders below.
