SCRAP: How we do it
SCRAP@Baylor is co-creating a living network of urban composting stations, community gardens, nutrition sites, and educational events that regenerate the land and reconnect people through research, teaching, service and collaborations.
Programs
Baylor Community Garden
Located blocks from the campus at South Ninth Street and James Avenue, the Baylor Community Garden provides hands-on opportunities for students, faculty, staff and Waco residents to explore regenerative agriculture, environmental practices, and intergenerational learning. It is a vibrant space for growing food, cultivating community and engaging the public in environmental resilience practices. This garden was established in 2011.
Growing Leaders and Learners Project
Established in 2019, this initiative, co-led by Baylor social work, engineering and education faculty, is a mentoring and education model that connects K-12 teachers and youth with faculty and college students through gardening, composting, microbusiness development and civic engagement. SCRAP@BAYLOR serves as a living classroom to help build a pipeline for a STEAM workforce. This includes our Aquaponic project, the GL2 Institute for educators, and microbusiness studios.
Environmental Humanities Minor
Established in 2023, the Environmental Humanities minor empowers students to explore climate change, sustainability, and justice through the lens of literature, history, religion, and the arts. Many students involved in SCRAP are also enrolled in the minor, which bridges storytelling and science, ethics and ecology.
Community Change Teaching Fellows
Established in 2025, this program supports faculty in designing or redesigning courses to equip undergraduates to become transformative leaders through academic coursework, mentorship and applied community service. Fellows work on real-world projects, including environmental restoration, neighborhood organizing and public education, many through the SCRAP Collective and the Baylor Community Garden.
