What sets the Garland School of Social Work apart?
At the Garland School, we believe in education that promotes service and justice, healing and restoration, and the dignity of all people and communities. Through innovative academics and experiential learning opportunities, both in-person and online, we strive to train and equip competent professionals who are compassionate change-makers seeking to make a difference. Students at the GSSW are inspired by expert faculty members, rigorous curriculum and thought-provoking discussions with close-knit peer cohorts in a welcoming, collegial environment. We have a place here for you!
Our 10th Competency
Founded on the principles of the social work profession, the Garland School recognizes the importance of religion and spirituality as part of both our shared and individual journeys. As part of our programs, you will learn about the importance of considering these beliefs and values as it relates to your profession. Unique to the Garland School of Social Work, the 10th Competency guides us to engage in ethical and anti-oppressive work and research that considers the role and influence of religion, spirituality, and philosophical perspectives. The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) requires nine competencies as part of our accreditation, but the GSSW adds a 10th. This philosophy is woven into the fabric of each of our programs.
We are dedicated to your success
The Garland School of Social Work offers a deeply personalized learning experience, combining close faculty mentorship, small and engaging classes, interdisciplinary opportunities, and individualized practicum placements. I chose social work because helping people from a social justice standpoint drew me in, and I chose Baylor Social Work because the integration of faith and practice showed me that I could bring all parts of me to the profession.”
