What sets the Garland School of Social Work apart?

At the Garland School, we believe in education that promotes service and justice, healing and restoration, and the dignity of all people and communities. Through innovative academics and experiential learning opportunities, both in-person and online, we strive to train and equip competent professionals who are compassionate change-makers seeking to make a difference. Students at the GSSW are inspired by expert faculty members, rigorous curriculum and thought-provoking discussions with close-knit peer cohorts in a welcoming, collegial environment. We have a place here for you!

Our 10th Competency

Founded on the principles of the social work profession, the Garland School recognizes the importance of religion and spirituality as part of both our shared and individual journeys. As part of our programs, you will learn about the importance of considering these beliefs and values as it relates to your profession. Unique to the Garland School of Social Work, the 10th Competency guides us to engage in ethical and anti-oppressive work and research that considers the role and influence of religion, spirituality, and philosophical perspectives. The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) requires nine competencies as part of our accreditation, but the GSSW adds a 10th. This philosophy is woven into the fabric of each of our programs.

We are dedicated to your success

The Garland School of Social Work offers a deeply personalized learning experience, combining close faculty mentorship, small and engaging classes, interdisciplinary opportunities, and individualized practicum placements. Through this supportive environment, students connect their passions with real-world practice, meaningful relationships, and a diverse, collaborative academic community.

Mentorship and research

GSSW faculty are renowned, expert leaders who have a passion for sharing knowledge with students and lead by example in and out of the classroom. They model service and leadership, offering students meaningful mentorship. Faculty mentors are resources for students as they navigate our programs. Mentors often continue beyond graduation to develop professional relationships as colleagues with their mentees. Students may also have the opportunity to partner with faculty on research throughout their educational journey.

Small, engaging classes

The GSSW student-to-professor ratio is approximately 10:1, and the average class size is 15 students, which translates into an environment of active, meaningful learning. The size and style of classes offered at the GSSW, both in-person and online, give students the opportunity to connect with classmates and professors on a deeper level. Our professors and students come from all walks of life and bring their own unique perspectives into the learning environment. Our classes allow for deep engagement, lively discussion and meaningful connection with one another.

Collaborative opportunities

The GSSW partners with other departments to provide several options that allow students to connect their passions. MSW dual degrees are offered at our Waco campus in partnership with Baylor’s Hankamer School of Business and Truett Theological Seminary. The MS in Interdisciplinary Studies combines courses in Social Work, Health and Human Sciences, and Business. The Social, Nonprofit & Public Leadership program connects students with the Baylor Collaborative on Hunger and Poverty.

Social Work practicum education

No one works more closely with social work students on internship placement than the Garland School. Both campuses have dedicated individuals who work directly with students and placement sites to create successful partnerships. Our Practicum team is dedicated to your success. They take into consideration your interests and location and do their best to match you with a site that will merge your classroom learning with real-world application.

Tailor Your Education

We know students value a curriculum that prepares them for meaningful careers and allows them to customize their learning experience. Our social work programs (BSW, MSW, Online MSW) offer specializations and concentrations. Our Interdisciplinary program offers a fully customizable Master of Science degree, and our Social, Nonprofit and Public Leadership program offers both a Master of Arts degree and two professional certificates.

“

I chose social work because helping people from a social justice standpoint drew me in, and I chose Baylor Social Work because the integration of faith and practice showed me that I could bring all parts of me to the profession.”
