Our History
In 2019, the Garland School of Social Work celebrated 50 years of social work education at Baylor University and Dr. Preston Dyer's 50 years of service to this school and profession. Social work became an academic department at Baylor in 1969, with Dr. Dyer as the founding chair.
For more than half a century, Baylor Social Work has challenged students with rigorous curriculum and hands-on field experiences that equip them with the skills needed to serve others and help improve the well-being of individuals, families, and communities. As they become alumni, they continue their journeys as culturally responsive and competent social work professionals ready to pursue licensure and promote meaningful change in the world.
Today, the Garland School of Social Work offers three degrees: BSW, MSW and PhD, and ranks among the nation’s top 25% of social work graduate schools in nation. We have two thriving campuses, one in Downtown Waco and one available nearly anywhere online. And our compassionate, hardworking alumni serve all over the world. We are so proud of the work of those who have walked through these doors, those who continue as a part of the school today, and those who are yet to join us.
