Adult Clergy Sexual Abuse Advocacy & Research Collaborative
What is Clergy Sexual Abuse of Adults?
Adult Clergy Sexual Abuse is a grave violation of trust and ethical boundaries within religious communities. When clergy members, such as priests, pastors, or rabbis, exploit their position of authority and spiritual influence to engage in sexual acts with congregants, it constitutes a betrayal of the sacred trust placed in them.
The inherent power imbalance in the relationship between clergy and their congregants creates an environment ripe for abuse. Congregants often seek guidance and help from their spiritual leaders, leaving them vulnerable to manipulation and exploitation. Clergy members hold significant influence over the congregant's religious beliefs, emotional well-being, and sense of community.
It is crucial to understand that any sexual contact between a clergy member and a congregant is inherently abusive due to the immense power differential. The congregant's ability to freely consent is compromised, as they may feel pressured to comply or may not fully comprehend the consequences of such a violation of boundaries. The clergy member's position of authority and trust can create a sense of obligation or fear of repercussions for the congregant, rendering consent impossible.
The devastating impact of clergy sexual abuse on adult congregants are far-reaching, affecting their psychological well-being, physical health, relationships with others, and spiritual state, including and especially their relationship with God. Survivors often experience profound trauma, betrayal, and a loss of faith, making it imperative for religious institutions to prioritize prevention, accountability, and support for those affected.
About Us
The Adult Clergy Sexual Abuse Advocacy and Research Collaborative is committed to shedding light on this pervasive and serious issue and fostering a culture of transparency, accountability, and survivor-centered care within faith communities. By combining advocacy, support services, and pioneering research, we strive to create lasting change and ensure the sanctity of the clergy-congregant relationship.
Our mission is threefold...
Research - Through rigorous academic research, we aim to deepen the understanding of the dynamics, impacts, and prevention of clergy sexual abuse of adults. Our findings inform best practices, policies, and educational initiatives to protect congregants and hold abusive clergy accountable.
Advocacy - We advocate for survivors of clergy sexual abuse by amplifying their voices, validating their experiences, and supporting reform within religious institutions. Through raising public awareness and advocating for legislative changes to explicitly criminalize adult clergy sexual abuse, we champion systemic changes to create safer environments where congregants can worship and seek spiritual guidance without fear of exploitation or abuse.
Collaboration - We engage in collaborations that span research, advocacy, and support services. Our collaboration with scholars allow us to ground our efforts in evidence-based best practices and deepen our understanding of the complex dynamics and impacts involved in clergy sexual abuse of adults. Simultaneously, we collaborate with advocacy groups and support organizations to connect adult survivors of clergy sexual abuse with pathways to reclaim their autonomy, find their voice, and pave their path toward healing and recovery.
