Social Work Practicum Education
Practicum education at the Garland School of Social Work is a transformative element of the degree program for Master of Social Work (MSW) and Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) students.
What is a practicum?
A practicum is an internship. Social work internship placement allows students to apply their classroom knowledge while gaining practical experience with the opportunities and challenges they are likely to encounter on the job.
BSW and MSW Foundation students intern for 240 hours a semester/term for a total of 480 hours.
MSW Advanced students intern for a total of 550 hours across two semesters/terms.
Placements are available in settings such as (but not limited to):
- Hospitals
- Schools
- Non-profit organizations
- Community mental health sites
- Adoption and foster care agencies
- Residential and outpatient treatment centers
- Veteran services
- Homeless outreach
- Grief and hospice services
- Counseling
- Congregations
- Skilled nursing care
