Title: Case Manager
1. Why is it important for you to work with social work interns?
I was so very fortunate to have wonderful professionals that gave of their time to support my growth during my time at Garland School of Social Work, and it feels important to give back in this way to honor their time and care. I also love seeing how each intern grows and changes throughout the year in their knowledge, their confidence and as individuals. Seeing them make connections to learning happening in the classroom with work happening at their internship placement is beautiful. Their excitement for the work also continues to renew an excitement in me. This year, both interns that I had the honor of working with would become so excited for any opportunity given to them and it was a constant reminder that my “normal” day was full of wonderful opportunities to walk alongside the clients and community partners we serve. It also challenges me as a professional to keep growing in my knowledge, leadership skills and stay abreast of what is happening in the field so I can better serve interns. And they always, always, always teach me so much as well.
2. How long have you had GSSW interns?
Five years.
3. Tell us a little about yourself and your job, including how long have you been in your position.
I have been a Case Manager at MCH Family Outreach for almost six years. I have the opportunity to spend my days supporting families in the community through in-home case management, parent education classes and parent support groups. I am a Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) practitioner, and love educating parents and community partners on how to better work with, parent, and support children. I co-lead an adoption support group and also provide post-adoption case management services.
Outside of work, I love spending time making things though embroidery, cross stitch, knitting, and the most recent addition is learning to quilt. I can often be found relaxing at home and baking yummy, sweet treats to share with others.
4. Tell us a little about your agency.
I work for Methodist Children's Home in the Family Outreach Department. We have 14 Outreach Office across Texas and New Mexico where we provide support to parents, caregivers, families and children in the community. We do this through various programs that include in-home case management, parent education classes, parent support groups, family-based clinical therapy, and foster care. Methodist Children’s Home’s goal is to, “Empower all we serve to experience life to the fullest.”
5. What does it mean to you to have received this award?
I feel incredibly honored to receive Task Supervisor of the Year. I had such wonderful task supervisors and [internship] instructors during my time at the GSSW who helped me grow into the professional I am today and set a foundation for how I try to support interns even still. I have had the pleasure of supporting many incredible interns over the past five years and see each of them as individuals who have taught me so much about both me and the field we are in. I’m thankful for working at an agency that sees the importance of supporting those growing in our field and who have supported my professional development in growing my leadership skills that have helped me in how I engage and support the interns that we have. This has been a special time of remembering the growth within myself and the growth I get to see in others every year.
6. What others say about Hannah.
Hannah is attentive, caring, passionate and a true advocate for her clients. She was intentional about making time for my co-intern and me, answering our questions and supporting, and challenging us to be the best social workers we could be. She is empathetic and cares deeply for every part of her work. She is a light to MCH! —GSSW Intern
