Baylor’s Diana R. Garland School of Social Work Celebrates National Social Work Month
Every day, in hospitals and schools, in faith communities and government offices, in the quiet corners of neighborhoods many people never see, social workers show up. They walk alongside people in the hardest moments of their lives — and they keep coming back.
March is National Social Work Month, and the Diana R. Garland School of Social Work at Baylor University is proud to join communities across the country in celebrating the social workers who make that kind of difference every single day.
The National Association of Social Workers set this year’s theme as: "Social Workers: Uplift. Defend. Transform." It's a theme that reflects the heart of the profession: enhancing human well-being, meeting people's most basic needs, and standing with those who are vulnerable.
"Social work is one of the most rewarding, most versatile professions today, and the field continues to grow each year," said Dr. Luci Ramos Hoppe, interim dean of the Garland School. "Social workers are serving in crucial roles throughout our communities, serving individuals across the lifespan in an effort to help people flourish all over the world.
That core desire is woven into everything the Garland School does. Founded on a mission of preparing social workers in a Christian context for worldwide service and leadership, the School has grown into one of the leading social work programs in the nation — graduating more mental health professionals than any other program at Baylor University and sending alumni into communities across Texas, the country and around the globe.
Throughout March, the Garland School is celebrating the students, faculty, alumni and community partners who bring this mission to life. There will be student engagement events in the School’s Downtown Campus, tabling events for everyone on main campus and lots of fun across social media including the launch of the School’s brand new TikTok channel. Join us on campus or share your stories on social media and tag the Garland School, wherever you get your social media! (#sicemsocialwork)
National Social Work Month is a reminder that behind nearly every statistic about poverty, mental health, child welfare or community resilience, there is a social worker ... always working with purpose and heart. The Garland School is grateful for every one of them, not only in March, but every day of every week of every year.
The Garland School offers undergraduate, master's and doctoral programs in social work, equipping graduates with the ethical foundation, practical experience and compassionate hearts needed to address complex human challenges. Degree options include a BSW, an MSW available in Waco or fully online, three joint degrees and an online PhD program. In addition, the Garland School has expanded and now offers two additional master’s degree options that include social work courses: an MA (and professional certificates) in Social, Nonprofit and Public Leadership and an MS in Interdisciplinary Studies.
