Opportunities and Celebrations
Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month is an annual celebration in the United States that honors the histories, cultures, contributions, and enduring impact of Hispanic and Latino/a/e communities. Observed nationally from September 15 to October 15, this month recognizes the influence of individuals whose heritage traces back to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America, while celebrating the vibrancy, resilience, and richness of these diverse cultures. September 15 coincides with the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, with additional independence celebrations in Mexico and Chile later in the month.
At the Garland School, this commitment is reflected in our continued focus on cultural awareness, equity, and community engagement. Throughout the month, we will highlight Hispanic and Latino/a/e voices and experiences through events, Baylor campus programming, and social media spotlights that celebrate identity, scholarship, and advocacy. We remain committed to fostering a more inclusive and informed community, not only during this month, but year-round.

National Suicide Prevention Month
September is Suicide Awareness Month, a time to educate and raise awareness about suicide and mental health.
At the Diana R. Garland School of Social Work at Baylor University, this month brings awareness to those who have died by suicide and to those who struggle with thoughts to end their lives. We instill in each of our students that they have worth and value, and we are preparing them to go out into the community to support mental health needs. This month, take some time to check on a friend, go explore, and finally, practice self-care.
If you have thoughts about ending your life, please call or text the National Suicide Hotline at 988 or go to your nearest Emergency Room.
