Practicum/ Internship
You will receive an email from the Practicum office detailing the next steps in the process for securing an internship placement. You must submit the paperwork included in that email and adhere to the interview process and timeline for next steps to begin SWO 5491 Foundation Internship I. If you are not sure if you have received this information or if this applies to you, please contact the Practicum Education Program Manager at Krista_Barrett@baylor.edu. Students who do not meet the required deadlines may start some course work but may have to delay practicum until the next academic year.
Electives
Three (3) hours of elective credits are required for the standard degree program. 4000 level BSW courses, along with Special Topics courses/seminars (4V80, 5V80) and/or other courses approved by the MSW Program Director may be taken to fulfill the elective requirement. Most MSW students choose to take their elective during the Advanced year in the MSW program. Students may choose to complete their elective credit during the foundation year, options such as Foundations for Social Justice (SWO 4315) and others can be found on the GSSW website. If you have questions about electives, or timing, please discuss this with the MSW program manager during your advising appointment.
Degree Plans
Links to degree plan templates and course descriptions are available on the MSW Curriculum webpage. Please review these, but you will receive your own plan of study from the MSW Program Manager at your advising appointment.
Registration tips for a smooth registration process:
- Check: Please check BearWeb for registration holds before your assigned date and time. If you have a hold, you need to contact the office that placed the hold.
- Concurrent Enrollment: Many of your social work courses require concurrent enrollment. If you receive an error that indicates you aren’t meeting the prerequisite, be sure you are registering for those courses at the same time. That should solve the problem.
- Registration Issues: If you run into any issues or errors when registering, please attach a screenshot of the registration page and the error message when emailing me so I can quickly identify the error and its solution.
- Important Dates: Fall classes begin Monday, August 24, 2026. New students, including Baylor Advanced Standing BSW students must attend a mandatory orientation on August 20 from 8-5.
- New and Advanced Standing students: including Baylor Advanced Standing BSW students, must attend a mandatory orientation on August 20 from 8-5. There will be additional practicum and program meetings on August 25 and August 27 from 8:30-12:30. This is prior to the beginning of your internship and will help you with a smooth transition.
- Canvas Orientation: You will receive access to a mandatory orientation Canvas course this summer. Please check your Baylor email regularly so you can complete it before practicum and internship begins.
Important Financial Aid Considerations:
Tuition Rate: The tuition rate for the residential MSW for the 2026-2027 academic year will be $875 per credit hour. You will receive information regarding tuition remission and scholarship information soon.
- VA Benefits: Students receiving/eligible to receive VA benefits are encouraged to submit certification requests as soon as they register. Please visit https://registrar.web.baylor.edu/VABenefits and contact VA_benefits@baylor.edu for more information about available resources.
- Financial Aid Considerations: Full-time status for graduate students is considered 9 credit hours. As most MSW students take more than 9 hours, you will need to submit a Cost of Attendance Form to receive a financial aid package that accounts for more than 9 credit hours. Submitting a Cost of Attendance Adjustment Appeal form does not guarantee that your Cost of Attendance will change. If loans are increased due to a Cost of Attendance Adjustment, it is your responsibility to take the necessary steps to secure the additional loan funds. Please note, not all students may need to submit this form if they are utilizing other funding sources and do not need more loans. Please reach out to Financial Aid directly at: https://onestop.web.baylor.edu/.
- Financial Aid Webinars and Appointments: Would you like to speak to someone about the cost of your Master of Social Work degree? Baylor's Financial Aid Office offers webinars and individual appointments at a time that works for you. Click here for more information and to sign up today!
Please note: While the Garland School of Social Work provides resources to support and advise students throughout their degree program, it is ultimately the responsibility of the student to ensure they are registered for the appropriate courses and sections to progress through their degree program at their preferred pace. Course faculty are subject to change; however, you are guaranteed a seat in the courses you need.
