Social and Community Service Managers

These individuals play a vital role in overseeing programs and organizations that provide assistance to individuals and communities in need through organizations like churches, nonprofits, and community centers. They’re responsible for ensuring the effective delivery of social services and the overall well-being of the communities they serve.

Christian social and community service managers integrate their faith into their work by upholding values such as compassion, justice, and service. They advocate for vulnerable populations, ensuring that social services are accessible to all individuals. Through their leadership, coordination, and commitment to Christian values, they make a significant impact on the lives of those in need.

Duties:

Identify community needs and develop programs to meet those needs. This includes assessing resources, designing intervention strategies, and setting measurable goals.
Manage program budgets and seek funding opportunities to support the services provided.
Oversee and supervise staff members.
Collaborate with community partners, stakeholders, and volunteers to enhance service delivery, foster partnerships, and advocate for necessary community resources.

Substance Abuse Social Worker

These social workers play an important role in helping with the recovery of individuals struggling with substance abuse. They work in places like mental health clinics, hospitals, rehabilitation and recovery centers, and correctional facilities.

For substance abuse social workers who embrace Christian principles, their work is guided by values like compassion, forgiveness, and redemption. They recognize that addiction is a complex issue that requires not only medical and behavioral interventions but also spiritual guidance and support. Christian social workers integrate faith-based interventions such as Bible study, prayer, and spiritual guidance into their work.

Duties:

Conduct assessments of clients’ substance use history, mental health, family dynamics, and social support systems to develop individualized treatment plans.
Provide individual counseling to clients, addressing their unique needs and challenges.
Facilitate group therapy sessions, creating a supportive environment for clients to share their experiences, learn from one another, and develop coping skills.
Collaborate with healthcare professionals and treatment providers to coordinate and advocate for clients’ comprehensive care.
Provide education and support to families affected by substance abuse, helping them understand addiction as a disease and develop strategies to support their loved one’s recovery.

Answer the Call with a Master of Social Work from Baylor

Whether you want to help people one-on-one or influence change on a grander scale, earning a Master of Social Work (MSW) will help you get the skills and knowledge to succeed.

At Baylor University’s Diana R. Garland School of Social Work, our MSW program offers two specializations, Clinical Practice and Community Practice, and prepares students to serve as licensed professionals in their communities. Plus, the degree program is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.

While this MSW program is open to students of all faiths, it places importance on the integration of faith and practice. For example, the Council on Social Work Education requires the school to be guided by nine competencies as part of its accreditation. But we’ve developed a 10th competency based on the importance that faith plays in the profession:

Engage in ethical and anti-oppressive social work practice and research that considers the role and influence of religion, spirituality, and philosophical perspectives.
