Background
Emma Jones is a full-time lecturer at the Garland School of Social Work Houston Campus. Emma is a two-time alumna of Baylor University ('12,'13), who joined the Garland School of Social Work as an adjunct at the Houston campus in 2017. Emma returned to her hometown of Houston after completing her MSW and began working in psychiatric social work, providing crisis intervention and disposition for emergency room patients within a large hospital system across the Houston area. Emma then transitioned to social work in a primary care setting as a part of the state-wide HOPES Program to reduce child abuse in Texas, utilizing screening tools to identify families at risk for child abuse and providing proactive intervention. Emma continued her clinical work as a clinician in an intensive outpatient program, combining her love for psychiatric crisis intervention and for medical social work, providing individual, group and family therapy to children and adolescents with chronic illness and co-occurring mental health diagnoses. Emma serves on the Harris County Child Fatality Review Team, as well as the Suicide Prevention sub-committee, in which she engages with other agencies to create policy suggestions and programmatic changes to reduce preventable deaths. Through several semesters of teaching, Emma has become passionate about supporting students in widening their lens to see the implications of policy on all levels of social work, and empowering students to become agents of change in their spheres of influence. Emma lives in Houston with her husband, Zack. Emma enjoys being active, cooking and spending time with her friends and family.
