Dr. Melissa Hay Isho graduated from the PhD in Social Work program in 2022 and is currently working at Transformation Waco as Director of Community Schools Initiative.

What was your primary motivation for pursuing a PhD in Social Work?
To increase my knowledge base and expand my research skills and to grow closer to reaching my full potential in the field of social work. Why the Garland School of Social Work? Integration of faith and practice.
What aspects of the Garland School’s PhD program were most impactful to you?
The opportunity to conduct my own research while being guided by a faculty member.
How did the faculty support you throughout your journey?
My faculty advisor's help was priceless with my dissertation process.
How would you describe the sense of community within the program?
I felt the study groups I formed with my peers was very, very helpful.
What did you gain from the program that you find most valuable in your career?
Research and data skills - I use these skills everyday. Most people actually have very little knowledge about data collection, etc.
How did the PhD program challenge you to grow?
I learned soooo much! I learned from the classes, but I really learned so much about research from the dissertation process. That process was incredibly difficult, but the learning was priceless.
Would you recommend the Garland School of Social Work PhD program to prospective students?
Yes, it was wonderful for me. However, taking all classes virtually is not for everyone. I loved it, but it might not be a good fit for some.
What advice would you give to someone considering the program?
The dissertation process can be lonely and grueling. Get ready, and the best dissertation is the completed one.
Is there anything else you would like to share about your experience at the Garland School of Social Work that might help prospective students?
I received so much encouragement and support!
